Saturday, September 22 saw the first Scale Day under the new format devised by CD Andrew McEntyre. The format is a more casual affair with participation being the key objective. There were 3 "undercover" judges, Greg Robertson, Terry Pearson and Allan Johnson, who used various criteria to select "winners". They were -

Pilots with non-scale aircraft were allowed to participate on the day and this surely contributed to the large attendance and from all the pit talk, encouraged some to go and build a scale model for next time. There were a few mishaps, Dave Jacob's Transavia Air Truk, always a handful due to the tricycle undercarriage arrangement, suffered a stall on take off and may not be repairable. Kevin Hay again showed his flying skills when his 1/3 scale Ultimate almost lost it's lower wing. One of the functional flying wires failed which saw the wing start to fold and Kevin nursed the model back to earth. Later examination also proved how lucky he was as the left hand elevator had stripped the gears and was non functional. He thought the elevator was acting strangely whilst he was trying to land!

Also in attendance were new members Paul O'Grady with his new 3D aerobatic model "Future" and prospective member and keen supporter Fred Willis. Fred brought his Citabria for Kevin Hay to test fly and after a bit of encouragement, Fred took the sticks and showed he's ready to go. Chris Klimeck again turned up with a hangar full of aircraft led by his 1/3 scale Fly Baby, then a Mitsubishi "Zero" fighter and a Waco Bipe (Pico kit). Peter Steer flew his Lancair ARF which I think is produced by CM Pro. Tony Berg continues his revitalized interest in fixed wing aircraft flying his Diabolo. Diabolo means "devil" in Spanish but I prefer the translation of the game diabolo which is also known as "the devil on two sticks". I wonder if Merv Cameron was the "devil on two sticks" when he built and flew this model?

Prizes were handed out based on the successful "raffle ticket" system and many thanks to Kevin Hay for organising the prizes kindly donated by Thomas Parker and Crash Supplies, Invermay Rd Launceston.

All in all it was another great flying day and well done to Andrew for the organisation of it. The attendance on the day suggests the format was a resounding success.
