Old Timer & Thermal Glider |
August 18, 2007 |
Saturday, August 18 was the date for the second Free Flight Scramble, followed by Thermal Glider and then the Old Timer event in the afternoon. The weather was perfect; not a cloud in the sky and a little breeze. Unfortunately no pictures of the Free Flight as the event was over before the photographer arrived! Thermal Glider saw the best turnout of participants for a long time. Thanks to Dave Jacobs for stirring us all to dust off the cobwebs of our gliders. Some of the heavier models struggled with the light weight bungee but nevertheless we all had a lot of fun. Winner was Greg Robertson.
The Old Timer event was run in the afternoon and another good turnout prevailed. 5 models in the event, 3 IC powered and 2 electric. Events consisted of a 3 minute duration where you had to estimate your time and land nearest the spot and a balloon popping event. Not very technical but a lot of fun for everyone. Gerry de Groot's scratch built mono wheel Interceptor had a very impressive climb. Kevin Hay brought out his refurbished (thanks Merv) PowerHouse. I think he'll have to put the wheels on top of the model as the landings were mostly upside down. Lot's of comments from the spectators; Dave Jacobs intends to get out some plans and build an OT for next year; Terry Pearson, Chris Klimeck and Tony Berg enjoyed the relaxation of watching the OT's float about the sky (brings back some memories Terry?). Winner of this event was also Greg Robertson. The restructured times allowed non participants to fly in between events. Terry, Chris and Tony taking the opportunity to fly their sports models and helicopter. Gerry de Groot brought out his scratch built "Guided Mite". Surely the smallest model ever to have flown at Symmons Plains! Kevin Hay brought out his Cessna 152 1/3rd scale (surely the largest model flown at Symmons Plains) but that is shown in a separate album here.
