Club Day - August 2, 2008

Return to Main Photo Index Page

Another good turn up on Club Day despite weather forecasts of 20kph winds that never really eventuated. It really is good to see members turn up to support Club Day. Not just for the social interaction but also to contribute to club revenue raising by supporting the Canteen. Canteen is held on every Club Day (the first Saturday in each month) and any competition day (usually the third Saturday in every month). Check the Events page for confirmation of dates. Prices are very reasonable and select your choice of hamburgers, sausages and onions or a footy frank. Coffee and tea are free of charge.

Those attending on the Saturday included Richard Cooper who brought along his new electric wing. The camaraderie of club involvement was evident in this model. Richard emailed me regarding hinging of the ailerons and I was happy to provide some tips and documentation, Richard then had it test flown by Greg Robertson who, along with Jacques Wakae sorted out the trimming of the model and Richard subsequently found it a delight to fly. The moral - don't be afraid to ask others or share your experiences; that's what club membership is all about.
Check out the photos of Richard and his model below.

Another test flight was Dave Jacobs and his "Southerner" Old Timer. Dave previously had built a "Slicker 50" for the Old Timer event but found, due to heavy building (Dave's analysis) and a short nose section meant that 20ozs of lead was required in the nose to get the correct CG. The result was not satisfactory. Not to be deterred, Dave built a "Southerner" and utilised the wing and tail from the Slicker which coincidentally were the same construction in either plan. Dave powered the Southerner with an OS45. Jacques Wakae test flew the model and as the after flight photos of Dave holding the model attest, it was a very pleased builder that took it home. Chris Klimeck also flew a couple of models and there is a picture of his electric powered "slope soarer".

Another new flier on the day was our youngest member, Matthew Riall. Matthew was accompanied by his grandfather, Peter and they brought along Matthew's Easy Fly electric glider. The glider looks like a chinese clone of the Multiplex Easy Glider. It is manufactured by ST Models and comes complete with everything required to fly. There are a few quirks that need to be sorted out (motor brake) and Greg R commented that in the windy conditions the model was a bit of a handful. Matthew had a short stint at the sticks and you couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

Neither Greg nor I flew on the Saturday due a sudden lapse in memory - Greg forgot the tail to his glider and I left behind the nose hatch for the Magister. As luck would have it, the next day (Sunday) looked to good to stay at home and after a prompt from Greg and Alice we headed off to the field again, making sure everything was packed. Weather was fantastic (better than Saturday). We were visited by Derril Kay and John Madden from NWAM. John brought along the Executive Twin he had flown before and also a Sportsman Aviation Corsair (53" wingspan). This was to be the first flight of the Corsair. This kit comes with a dummy radial engine but John ditched that and put his own 3 cylinder radial Saito 90FS! Typically Corsair, the model kept wanting to get it's nose dirty but John soon worked it out and the model was in the air. After a brief settling in period, the retracts were up and the pitch change was quite noticeable. A bit of mixing on the radio to incorporate some elevator compensation will be the go. The model was impressive in the air and sounded the part.

Another modeller present was Bill Evans and his family. Bill flew what he called his aptly named "Bird Dog". Also there was Rob Laing who has rejoined the club after a few years pursuing alternative interests. Rob brought his Great Planes ARF glider and a Great Planes "Patriot" powered by a OS46AX. Unfortunately the IC failed to start but Rob had the ever reliable electric model glider to ensure his trip to the field was not wasted. Nice to have you back Rob!

Put a SPARK in your life and fly electric! George
