The first Free Flight/Old Timer event was set down for July 19 and quite a few turned up including Tony Grey and friends from Hobart and John Madden and Derril Kay from NWAM. The only Free Flight attendee was Tony Grey from Hobart? Whilst the weather was fine initially, by mid morning it was cold and a bit blustery. That kept a few in the hangar, including yours truly but didn't deter Kevin Hay and Tony Grey having a go.
After remotoring the Powerhouse with a OS SF61 motor, he had quite a few problems trying to get the motor to start. This was no deterrant to Kevin and his perseverance paid off as he finally got it to fire. Tony Grey knew all the intricasies of the diesel engine in his"Miss America" Old Timer - he crafted the engine himself! Here is Tony's description of the motor -
- 6.7 cc rear rotary valve intake
- HP carb with mod low speed needle
- I made the crakcase pattern & melted the alumium in my Elain's (his wife's) ceramic doll oven!
- 2 ball bearing
- alloy con rod
- aircraft alloy 2024 t3
- stroke 22.5 mm / bore 18.5
- This is the third one from the same pattern; first one was a piston port , second ,a reed valve had more power but vibrated and was not as good on the idle.
- Model "Miss America 6 pounds weight using a 15/6 prop
He has adopted a novel approach with the exhaust at the front of the cylinder. Tony has even gone to the trouble of casting his initials on either side of the crankcase and you can see the G for Grey in the photo of a second motor he has made. Starting the motor was no trouble and purred along quite nicely. Whilst the days of ARF "everything" allow many that don't have the time or the building skills to particpate in this fantastic hobby, it is quite exciting to see the craftmanship that modellers like Tony bring to the hobby. Well done Tony and thanks for paying us a visit. Given the poor conditions, it was decided to try again on the 26th.
Also there on the 19th were Derril Kay and John Madden from the NWAM
club. Derril brought along his autogyro and John brought along his Executive
Twin which was built originally from Airborne plan No 599. It is a 1.45m
twin engined model and draws it's power from 2 25's. It flew very well
and very fast! In fact the low pass was so fast I over compensated my camera
panning and caught the shot as the model was only just entering the frame.
July 26 came along and the weather gods were kind to us. This allowed 4 entrants
this time (the cost of travel precluded the Hobart guys from from reattending
especially as there is another FF/OT event on August 16.) The entrants on
the 26th were, Kevin Hay - Powerhouse, Andrew McEntyre - Red Zephyr, Derril
Kay - Hot Drop
and myself with a e-powered Kavan Phoenix. I have recently repowered the
Phoenix with a Hyperion HP-Z2213-20, Zippy 1300 lipo and a 9 x 6. A big difference
from the geared 380, 11x7SF prop and 8x1400 NiMh I had recently used. I did
originally power the 380 with the first lipos used at the club, this was
in June 2003 however these lipos were first generation and predated balance
taps. The result was a puffed cell and these were soon retired and it was
back to NiMh. The model is very light weighing just 765gms with a wing loading
of 8.5 ozs/sq ft hence the reason I didn't fly the previous week. This power
train gave me about 95 watts per lb!
A lot of fun was had and the results were - 1. George Carnie 652pts; 2. Kevin Hay 551; 3. Derril Kay 513 and 4. Andrew McEntyre 434.
Other models flown on the day were Merv Cameron's scratch
built ST90 powered Duster, Greg Robertson's Giles 202, Fred Willis had
two models, his trainer (name escapes me) and an ARF Enya powered Dragon
Lady. The last picture (on page 2) is of Peter Riall and his newly acquired
ARF
Boomerang
trainer.
Put a SPARK in your life and fly electric! George
