I first started RC aeromodelling in 1980. Whilst living in Sydney, I joined a club and travelled about an hour or so to the field. I had been given an Aeroflyte Invader first released in 1964. With this I had an OS 15 and thought I had most of what I required. So off to the hobby shop to buy a radio! I bought a JR 5 channel FM radio (their first FM radio I think). To my surprise the radio set was over $500 - I was only earning about $200 a week! I still bought it such is the attraction of this hobby - we and our money are easily parted! 30 years later and nothing has changed (probably spending more).
